Description:

The Cultural Industry Music Organization Operating Grant is designed to increase the financial viability and business growth of the music and sound recording industry in Alberta, while still recognizing the cultural importance of the industry as a whole. Eligible organizations may receive funding to invest in the operations and administration of their organization to further its mission and strengthen the organizations and industry’s capacity.

Comments on Funding:

Eligible organizations may receive no less than a minimum of $5,000 or more than a maximum of $125,000.

Deadline:

April 1 – June 1 (annually)

Eligibility:

Applicants must:
1. be a sound recording organization;
2. be registered and in good standing in accordance with the appropriate provincial legislation;
3. have been in operation in Alberta for at least 12 months prior to application;
4. be at least 51% majority owned by an Albertan or Albertans, and the effective control must reside with the persons who are residents of Alberta;
5. develop, produce, license, release, promote and distribute sound recordings as a principal business function by individuals other than the organizations principals, board members or stakeholders (artist-run labels or artist-entrepreneurs are not eligible);
6. be physically located in Alberta;
7. have industry-recognized national distribution demonstrated by being a factor recognized distributor, or hold a minimum of 3 nationally recognized vendor numbers;
8. have revenue, comprising of sales revenue, publishing royalties and licence fees that exceeds $15,000 in the last full fiscal year prior to applying for the grant;
9. have the production copyright of the sound recording(s) owned or licensed by the label for each recording released;
10. have published in the 12 months prior to application a minimum of 2 sound recording releases with a minimum running time of at least 20 minutes;
a) For the programs purpose a sound recording release is equivalent to:
i. 1 physical full-length album (CD or vinyl);
ii. 1 digital full-length album;
iii. 6 physical CD singles or EPs, or 6 vinyl singles or Eps;
iv. 6 individual digital tracks.

Application Steps:

Applicants must:
1. review the Music Organization Operating Grant Guidelines to review the program and application requirements;
2. create an online profile:
a) New applicants must request access to set up an online profile prior to filling out an application;
b) To set up a profile, complete the GATE Front Office Registration form and email it to: registrationamf@gov.ab.ca;
c) Their login credentials will be emailed to them.
3. complete the application package. Login to the Online Grant Application System to begin their application;
4. submit their application.

Documentation Needed:

Applicants must:
1. submit a complete application package, including a signed applicant agreement, through the Online Grant Application System (GATE) prior to the grant deadline date.
2. be required to provide the following information in the application:
a) A brief description of the organization, including the mandate;
b) Organizational details, such as revenues and expenses; and
c) A list of all eligible sound recording releases.

3. The following documents will be required as PDF attachments to the application:
a) Annual corporate registry documents (annual return) showing the organization’s legal name, shareholder/director
breakdown and standing;
b) The organization’s most recent annual financial statements, accompanied by:
– Grants over $50,000 require a Review Engagement Report prepared by a designated accountant; licensed to practice in Alberta;
– Grants over $25,000 require a Compilation Engagement Report prepared by an accountant; or
– Grants of $25,000 or less require a detailed financial statement approved and signed by two board members other than the Treasurer, or if a sole proprietorship a copy of the most recent T2125 tax form.
c) Promotional materials from the previous year, such as catalogues; and
d) A minimum of two sound recording releases published in the previous copyright year sent by mail is required.

Other Things to Note:

The intake period is open from April 1 to June 1 annually.
