Description:
The Canada-Alberta Job Grant is a training program where an employer applies on behalf of their present or future employees for eligible training costs. Employers decide who gets training and what type of training may be needed for their employees.
Comments on Funding:
Eligible employers are required to contribute a minimum of one-third of the total training costs for existing employees. Government contributes two-thirds of the cost to a maximum of $10,000 per trainee per fiscal year. If hiring and training an unemployed Albertan, up to 100% of training costs could be covered, up to $15,000 per trainee. An employer is eligible for up to a maximum amount of $300,000 per fiscal year.

Eligibility:
Applicants must be:
For Employers
1.Incorporated under the Business Corporations Act (Alberta).
2. A partnership registered under the Partnership Act (Alberta).
3. A sole proprietor with a trade name registered under the Partnership Act (Alberta).
4. Registered under an act of the legislature of a province or the Parliament of Canada.
5. A non-profit registered under a special act or a private act of the Alberta legislature.
6. A non-profit registered under part 9 of the Companies Act (Alberta).
7. Crown Corporations: Agriculture Financial Services Corporation and ATB Financial (Alberta
Treasury Branches) in communities with a population less than 100,000.
8. First Nations.
9. Metis Settlements.
10. Be registered and operate as a business that has an established production capability, plant, or
place of business in Alberta for a minimum of one year before the application received date.
11. Provide safe working conditions, be in good standing and comply with the Employment
Standards Code, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workers’ Compensation Act and all
other applicable legislation and regulations.
12. Good standing is defined as: Workers’ compensation premiums are paid; no outstanding
Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) convictions; and/or any Employment Standards
orders are resolved.
13. Have met or currently meet all obligations to the province under previous grant agreements.
Unincorporated businesses registered for less than one year prior to the date the application is received
may be considered as eligible employers if they can demonstrate they have been operating for more than
one year
Eligible trainees must be employees and one of the following:
1. Canadian citizens
2. Permanent residents
3. Protected people under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada) who are entitled to work in Canada
4. Business owners (incorporated, unincorporated, sole-proprietor, partnerships) with 4 or fewer employees, including all owners, are now eligible trainees
5. Family members employed with the applicant company for more than 3 months
The following individuals are not eligible as Canada-Alberta Job Grant trainees:
1. Company owners (includes shareholders of a corporation and any member of the employer’s board or council) of businesses with more than 4 employees
2. Family members who are not current employees
3. Temporary Foreign Workers, or anyone temporarily working in Canada
Application Steps:
Applicants must:
1. Read the Application Guide provided
2. Complete the correct application for your trainees through the Canada-Alberta Job Grant portal.
Documentation Needed:
For Unincorporated businesses (sole proprietors or unincorporated partnerships), must provide the following documentation with their applications:
1. Trade name (i.e., the current registered business name) or partnership registration number.
2. Unincorporated business in a WCB-Alberta exempt industry under the Workers’ Compensation Act must submit a WCB-Alberta exempt industry letter.
3. Unincorporated businesses with coverage under the Workers’ Compensation Act must submit a Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB-Alberta) clearance letter.
4. One of the following:
– A copy of their federal payroll deductions.
– A copy of their GST Registration form.
– Statement of Business or Professional Activities Form (T2125) for the year prior to the application received date.
For unemployed trainees, the employer must submit the following with the CAJG Employer Application form:
1. A conditional offer of employment letter or a letter of employment. Both documents must include the trainee’s name and job title, the employer’s signature, the trainee’s signature, and the employment start date. The letterhead of the letter must match the legal entity name of the applicant.
2. The employer must provide one of the following federal government documents as proof of unemployment on behalf of the trainee:
– an itemized statement of Employment Insurance (EI) benefits claimed by the trainee in a calendar year; or
– the trainee’s most recent Record of Employment.
Supporting documents for applications
All CAJG Employer Application forms submitted to the CAJG must include a course outline and any other documentation that may aid in assessing the application. Supporting documentation must be provided at the time of application.
Training provider course outline
A satisfactory course outline or course curriculum must be provided at the time of application and demonstrate the training meets the minimum 21 instructional hours of training. Course outlines must include a breakdown of the following:
1. A description of the training course objectives.
2. Course structure including:
− Description of each module of the course with instructional hours and intended learning outcomes.
− Description of how participant(s) will receive instruction (e.g., online, in-class etc.) for each module.
3. Description of how participant’s learning will be assessed/evaluated .
4. Total training duration/length.
5. Total training hours.
6. Total cost of the course(s) per person.
7. Name of instructor.
8. Course capacity (number of participants), if applicable.
9. Dates of each training courses.
10. Credential received at the end of the training.
