Training and Employment Services – Self-employment Program

Description:

The Self-employment Program offers eligible Albertans who are looking to develop and start a new business with formal training, business plan development, one-to-one business counselling, coaching and guidance.

Comments on Funding:

Financial assistance through the Self-Employment Program is not intended to cover business start-up costs or for investment in the participant’s business.

Eligibility:

Applicants must:

1. Be unemployed, or working on average less than 20 hours per week over the last 12 weeks and planning to remain employed while in training
2. Be in Alberta with an Alberta address, or any address in the city of Lloydminster, for the duration of the training
3. Have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN)
4. Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident of Canada, or a protected person under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act–protected persons with a SIN that begins with 9 must have documentation to support they are a protected person
5. Be 18 years of age or older, and have not attended an education program under the Education Act in the past 12 months
6. Be suitable for the program as determined through an employability assessment
7. Be seeking to start a business for the purposes of self-employment, or have an existing business, or taking over an existing business where they did not have prior ownership
8. Own a minimum of 51% of the proposed business
9. Not be concurrently receiving similar self-employment training from a franchise company
10. Have a viable business concept for the program as determined through a business viability assessment
11. The proposed business must:
a. Be suitable and not in conflict or potential conflict with the Government of Alberta
b. Comply with all applicable legislation and regulations (e.g., environmental requirements, noise by-laws, zoning requirements)
c. Be located and operational in Alberta and registered under an act of the legislature of a province or the Parliament of Canada

2. Connect with an organization that delivers this training near them to determine their eligibility.

Documentation Needed:

Applicants must provide a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN) and additional information as requested.
