Description:

The Student Work Placement Program (SWPP) is an initiative to increase the job-readiness of students registered in STEM, healthcare, business and all other programs at Canadian post-secondary institutions. Wage subsidies are available to all employers and post-secondary institutions who are creating a work-integrated learning opportunity and who meet the program criteria.

Comments on Funding:

Funding is a wage subsidy that covers the cost of a studentā€™s salary by 50% up to a maximum of $5,000 and 70% up to a maximum of $7,000 for first-year students and under-represented groups including: women in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM); indigenous students; persons with disabilities; members of a visible minority; and newcomers.

Eligibility:

The applicants must:
1. be all employers;
2. be creating a work-integrated learning opportunity;
3. propose a position that has a biotechnology or healthcare focus or need to have a biotechnology or healthcare focus;
4. provide full-time or part-time employment up to a max. of 16 weeks,
5. be a bio-economy employer or healthcare employer and/or fulfilling a bio-economy or healthcare job function,
6. add the student to their payroll which includes Federal/Provincial tax deductions. Co-ops paid through a stipend or grant are not eligible. Participants are not eligible for the program as contractors.

The intern must be:
1. enrolled as a full-time or part-time student at a Canadian post-secondary education institution,
2. a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or persons to whom refugee protection has been conferred,
3. legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations,
4. studying in fields related to science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), business and/ or any other program;
5. first-year students and under-represented groups including: women in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM); indigenous students; persons with disabilities; members of a visible minority; and newcomers, if the applicant applies for the 70% wage subsidy.

Please note: international students are not eligible.

Biotech or healthcare employers can hire students from any post-secondary institutions across Canada through BioTalent Canadaā€™s Student Work Placement Program.
Should the co-op be longer than 16 weeks, employers must contact BioTalent Canada as they could be eligible to apply for another funding term.

Application Steps:

Apply online for SWPP funding in three easy steps:
1. Sign in to your BioTalent Canada user account. If you do not have an account, you can create one;
2. On your dashboard, click on the ā€œMy Applicationsā€ under Wage Subsidy Applications;
3. Click on the ā€œSubmit new wage subsidy applicationā€ button to get started.

Other Things to Note:

1.Online submissions are limited to SWPP and are not available for other programs at this time.
2. As a SWPP participant, you get the added benefit of free access to BioTalent Canadaā€™s new training programsā€”ā€œEssential Skills Fundamentals Training Programā€ and ā€œTechnical Skills Fundamentals Training Programā€. Access will be provided to you once your placement is approved.
Update: Post-secondary institutions (universities, colleges and polytechnics) are no longer eligible to participate in SWPP as the employer of record.
