Clean Technology: Carbon Capture, Utilization and Sequestration (CCUS) and Hydrogen

Description:

The Carbon Capture and Utilization program supports Alberta SMEs with technologies that convert carbon dioxide into useful products with significant commercial value. CCUS is an important pathway for Alberta and to decarbonize its heavy industries, like oil and gas, petrochemicals, and cement manufacturing, to meet 2030 to 2050 emissions reductions targets and net-zero ambitions.
Support is open to researchers, innovators, small and medium-sized enterprises, large companies and others who are seeking funding, expertise and/or sector leadership to advance technology development from TRL 3-7.

Comments on Funding:

Project funding can be up to and typically does not exceed $2 million per project from the Process. The continuous intake programs normally support 25 – 50% of total project costs, with remaining funding from other project partners and other funding agencies (including cash and in-kind support).

Eligibility:

Applicants must:
1. be technology developers;
2. be industry,
3. be industrial associations;
4. be small and medium-sized enterprises;
5. be research and development (R&D) organizations;
6. be post-secondary institutions;
7. be municipalities;
8. be not-for-profit organizations;
9. be government research labs;
10. be individuals;
11. have advancing technology development within a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) range of 3-7;
12. be not required to be based in Alberta but must demonstrate a clear value proposition for the province;
13. have strong end-user partnerships and/or funding from other organizations (preferred);
14. be encouraged to engage and include Alberta’s post-secondary and research institutions in the project consortium where appropriate;
15. have projects meeting the eligibility criteria:
a. can be either for innovation-commercialization or knowledge generation;
b. be aligned with Government of Alberta’s priorities, including the 2030 Innovation Targets;
c. have solutions along CCUS value chain to enable broad deployment, low carbon hydrogen technologies across entire value chain, next generation materials and products from natural gas.

16. When the applicant is not based in the province it is especially encouraged to have Alberta-based partners.

Application Steps:

Applicants must:
1. contact a Clean Resources Project Advisor, to determine if project scope meets the requirements;
2. register on SmartSimple, the online application portal;
3. complete and submit the Intake Form on SmartSimple;
4. wait for their Intake Form to be reviewed to determine if the proposed project will be invited to submit a Detailed Proposal.
