Description:

The Business Innovation component of the Canada Periodical Fund (CPF) provides financial support to eligible small- and mid-sized print and digital magazine publishers. This component of the CPF encourages innovation to adapt to changing market conditions and contributes to the diversity of content sought by Canadian readers.

Comments on Funding:

The Business Innovation component can provide up to $10,000 in start-up funding to help aspiring or emerging publishers plan, launch or further develop a digital-only periodical.

Eligibility:

Applicants must be:

For publishing firm or any affiliated companies:

1. be majority owned and controlled by Canadians
2. be private-sector entities, including corporations, not-for-profit organizations, partnerships and sole proprietorships (Note: All applicants, including for start-up projects, must have a Business Number [BN])
3. have their principal place of business in Canada

For Print magazines only:
1. The total average circulation for the magazine during the 12-month reporting period cannot exceed 100,000 copies per issue

For Digital-only magazines:
1. The maximum total revenue for any digital periodical cannot exceed $500,000

Application Steps:

Applicants must:
1. review the Application Guidelines carefully, including the definitions to ensure all criteria are met
2. create or access a Canadian Heritage Funding Portal account and apply online for CPF – Business Innovation – Magazines
3. provide all supporting documents, as detailed in the Application Guidelines

Documentation Needed:

Applicants must submit:
1. proof of legal status (for a first-time applicant or incorporated in the year if applicable);
2. quotes from consultants, if applicable;
3. written confirmation of in-kind contributions to the project and other sources of funding, if applicable; and
4. for not-for-profit organizations: a copy of the resolution of the Board of Directors in support of the project and identifying the authorized signatory.

For Print magazines:
1. a digital marked up copy of the last regular issue of the fiscal year; and
2. printing invoices, or circulation report (if available) that support the reported circulation information provided in the application for the declared reporting period (printers invoices must clearly show the number of copies printed).

Additional information and documents, such as audit circulation reports, financial statements, or additional issues of the magazine can be requested to determine the eligibility of a magazine.
