Youth in Natural Resources

The Youth in Natural Resources program offers eligible employers salary coverage to create STEM-related jobs within natural resources sectors and/or with a positive environmental outcome.

Comments on Funding:

Receive 75% up to $18,000 in funding towards a candidate’s salary, or 75% up to $30,000 in funding towards a candidate’s salary who has self-identified as an equity deserving candidate.Additional funding is available for underrepresented groups.

Applicants/host organizations must:

  • be organizations that are Canadian owned or Canadian subsidiaries, municipal or provincial government department​s,
  • provide a full-time work placement and training opportunities in an environmental role,
  • hire a new employee for a position connected to one of the four Natural Resource sectors, or be an organization interested in processes with a positive environmental outcome.
    Natural Resources sectors that qualify for funding include:
    a) Energy Sector - Clean Energy Technology; Energy Efficiency/Fuel Switching; Transmission, Smart Grid, Energy Storage; Sustainable Development of Non-Renewable Resources;
    b) Forest sector - Forestry and Support Activities; Ecology & Management; Non-Traditional Forest-Based Bioeconomy Products Manufacturing; Solid Wood Product Manufacturing; Pulp & Paper Product Manufacturing;
    c) Mining, Minerals & Metals Sector - Prospecting & Exploration; Processing & Manufacturing, Construction & Development; Mining Supply & Services; Extraction & Milling; Reclamation Closure & maintenance;
    d) Earth Sciences & Support Sector - Environmental Assessment; Natural Hazard Risk Analysis & Prevention; Environmental Protection; Geomatics & Earth Observation; Sustainable Development.

    Interns must:
  • be 15-30 years of age,
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or have refugee status,
  • currently unemployed or underemployed.
Application Steps:

Applicants must:

1. take the eligibility Quiz and complete the online host application to get approved,

2. find a Candidate for the approved position and have them apply (Employer hosts and approved Candidate become linked and contracts are issued.).

ECO Canada customer support team will finalize the match with the new hire.

Documentation Needed:

Applicants must submit:
1. job title, description & training plan (for employers);
2. postsecondary program info and a resume (for candidates).

Nov. 2023:
The Youth in Natural Resources Program has been fully allocated, all submitted applications will be added to a waitlist, in the event additional funding becomes available you will be notified by one of ECO Canada’s team members.
