Description:

The Forest Sector Investment and Innovation Program (FSIIP) – Collaboration Projects program provides funding for Ontario-based projects with at least $3 million in eligible costs undertaken through a collaboration of forest sector for-profit businesses, not-for-profit research organizations, forest industry associations and academia. Eligible collaborations should develop, diversify and transform Ontario’s forest sector through innovation in technology, process and/or products.

Comments on Funding:

Funding is up to 30% of eligible costs in the form of a grant to a maximum of $3 million.
Stacking with other government funding programs (for example, federal, provincial and municipal) is allowed to a maximum of 75% of eligible project costs.

Eligibility:

Applicants:
1. must be a collaboration of:
a) forestry-related not-for-profit corporations;
b) incorporated not-for-profit industry association representing a sector of Ontario’s forest industry;
c) Ontario forest and wood products corporations;
d) extra-provincial forest and wood products corporations;
e) federal forest and wood products corporations;
f) foreign forest and wood products corporations provided they have incorporated a Canadian/Ontario subsidiary and such entity will be the applicant;
g) Ontario-based post-secondary education institution.

2. must be a collaboration of at least three partners, out of which at least one Ontario-based for-profit forestry/wood products company;
3. must have Ontario-based projects;
4. must undertake projects with a focus on industry-leading innovation, the development and/or implementation of first-in-kind innovation or adaptation or adoption of existing innovations such as:
a) process innovation/modernization with broad application;
b) product innovation, new product development with benefits up and down the supply chain;
c) product innovation, new product development with broad benefits across Ontario’s forest sector and/or other related sectors (such as wood building construction and design) of Ontario’s economy.

Application Steps:

Applicants must:
1. submit a Stage I application. To apply, they must login to Transfer Payment Ontario and complete the Stage I Eligibility Checklist and Application Form.
2. submit a fully completed Stage II Business Plan and all required supplemental documents by the Stage II deadline, if they successfully passed Stage I.
There is a 2-stage application and evaluation process, as following:
– Stage I: project overview to determine whether project meets eligibility criteria and assessment of how well the project aligns with the objectives of the program;
– Stage II: competitive, rounds-based project evaluation process, including financial and technical due diligence and project risk assessment.
