Description:

The On-Farm Value-Added Grant Program supports primary producers in adding value to their agricultural products to grow sales, expand production capacity, explore market opportunities and create jobs in Alberta.
The program has 2 streams (Stream A and Stream B) and the stream will be determined by the program area, based on review of the budget sheet for eligible expenses and activities.

Comments on Funding:

Funding takes the form of a grant:
– of up to $50,000 for the On-Farm Value-Added Stream A;
– over $50,000 to maximum of $250,000 for the On-Farm Value-Added Stream B.

Eligible capital expenses: will be cost-shared at 25% grant and 75% applicant.
Eligible non-capital expenses: will be cost-shared at 50% grant and 50% applicant up to a maximum total amount of $50,000. The $50,000 maximum includes a $5,000 maximum for travel expenses.

Deadline:

Stream A – Opens April 15, 2024* Stream B – Open April 15 – May 27, 2024 *Application window will close when funds are fully utilized and may reopen if new funds become available.

Eligibility:

The applicant must:
1. be a primary producer;
2. be an individual or a corporation registered in Alberta that is operating in Alberta, or that can establish to the satisfaction of the minister that it will operate in Alberta;
3. be responsible for input costs for crops, bees or livestock;
4. produce at least $25,000 worth of commercial agriculture production annually;
5. not be a landlord whose only interest in the crop, bee, cattle operation is ownership of the land;
6. apply for activities under one or more of these funding categories:
a) processing capacity expansion;
b) food safety improvement;
c) new product and process development;

Application Steps:

Step 1: Applicants must check their eligibility:
a) Determine if they are eligible by reviewing the On-Farm Value-Added Program Terms and Conditions.
b) Confirm that their proposed activities are eligible activities listed in the Funding List.
c) Complete all sections of the application form. If they have questions on eligibility or program criteria, e-mail s-cap.valueaddedprograms@gov.ab.ca and a grant specialist will assist them provide support.

Step 2: Applicants must complete application form:
a) Complete and sign the On-Farm Value-Added Program Application Form.
b) Read ‘Part F: Certification’ carefully before they sign. Note that only original signatures will be accepted (electronic or digital signatures are not acceptable).

Step 3: Applicants must submit application form:
a) Stream A – Submit the completed Application Form and supporting documents within 90 calendar days of the project start date.
b) Stream B – Submit the completed Application Form and supporting documents by 11:59 pm MST on May 27, 2024.

Documentation Needed:

Stream A Applications must include:
a) a completed Program Application Form, signed by an authorized representative,
and all documents required to be submitted pursuant to that form,
b) quotations or invoices for expenses over $10,000, and any additional
supplementary documentation requested by the Minister.

Stream B Applications must include:
a) a completed Program Application Form, signed by an authorized representative,
and all documents required to be submitted pursuant to that form,
b) documents to demonstrate that the Applicant has the necessary capacity
(including financial and other resources) to complete the activities included in the Application (e.g., quotations or invoices for expenses over $10,000, business plan,
letters of support to justify market demand, status of financing for Project, market studies, etc.), and
c) any additional supplementary documentation requested by the Minister.

Other Things to Note:

1. To support continued innovation, growth and prosperity, the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP) has launched its programs. This 5‐year (2023-2028), $3.5 billion investment includes $1 billion in federal programs and activities and $2.5 billion in cost-shared programs and activities by federal-provincial-territorial governments.
