ElevateIP
Am I eligible to apply?
You can apply if:
- You’re a Canadian-Controlled Private Corporation (CCPC) which owns or has exclusive rights to the IP looking to be protected;
- Your company is headquartered in Eastern-Ontario;
- Your company has less than 500 full-time employees;
- Your company plans to stay and grow in Canada;
Note: eligibility does not require your company to be an Invest Ottawa client.
IP Assist (delivered by Invest Ottawa)
IP Assist is funded by the Government of Canada. To access this program, you must be an existing IRAP (Industrial Research Assistance Program) client with an ITA (Industrial Technology Advisor) assigned.
Eligibility Requirements: You are an IRAP client that is innovative technology focused, incorporated, profit-oriented small or medium-sized business located in Eastern Ontario with fewer than 500 full time employeess.

IP Advisory
Meet with one of our IP Advisors for 1:1 advisory support. This service includes:
- Support to help prioritize the most important IP considerations based on your company’s stage, sector, and goals.
- Review and plan your IP Strategy and how your innovations can be transformed into valuable IP assets or explore IP protection in employment contracts, licensing agreements and more.

- Access to subject matter experts for IP assessments and referrals to IP professionals who can support your IP strategy and implementation.
- Recommendations for educational resources to support greater clarity and confidence around your IP needs and priorities.
- Advisory support to help you explore potential next steps for your IP journey, including considerations related to funding opportunities through Invest Ottawa’s programs.
ElevateIP
ElevateIP is designed to support the improvement of IP Knowledge, the development of IP Strategy, and the creation of IP assets for startups in Eastern Ontario.
Invest Ottawa, Launch Lab, and Spark Centre are collaborating with Communitech and ISED to deliver a 3-tiered program:
- Tier 1: IP Education through training sessions, workshops, and online resources.
- Tier 2: IP Strategy development including patent mining and prior art searches, trademark searches, agreement reviews, and more.
- Tier 3: IP Creation such as patent drafting/filing/prosecution, trademark registrations, licensing agreement creation, Open-Source audits, and more.
IP Assist (delivered by Invest Ottawa)
IP Assist helps companies strengthen their IP knowledge and better understand the risks and opportunities connected to their innovations. The program is structured in two steps:
- Level 1 – IP Education: Build foundational knowledge of IP and explore how IP can support the commercialization of your innovations.
- Level 2 – Robust IP Strategy: Access funding support to advance your IP strategy. Delivered by an IP professional, this support may include technical and competitive landscape analysis, a tailored IP action plan, and more, to help inform your go/no-go decisions on new markets, products, and competitive risks.
Funding can support a range of activities depending on the program, including:
- Competitive landscape brief to analyze scientific or technological trends and make go/no-go decisions on new market opportunities, new products, and competitive risk.
- IP strategy development including an IP strategy laying out your firm’s go-forward long-term IP plan, including patent, trademark, licensing and trade secret strategies and searches.
- IP asset creation, including patent applications, trademark applications, out-licensing agreements, copyright registration, trade secret strategies and more.
