Quebec health certification program for salmonid-producing fish farms

Description:

Some diseases can limit the development of Quebec fish farms. The profitability of a fish farm can be seriously affected by the mortality rate or growth delays linked to these diseases.

The program gives Quebec fish farms the opportunity to produce and offer fish (eggs, fry, fish or broodstock) for which a health status is granted.

Eligibility:

The eligibility criteria are as follows:

The operator must hold a valid land-based aquaculture licence under the Commercial Aquaculture Act This hyperlink will open in a new window.and be recognized as an agricultural producer within the meaning of the Agricultural Producers Act This hyperlink will open in a new window.. These statuses must be maintained in good standing throughout participation in the program.
All companies producing salmonids can apply for registration in the program if they agree to respect the conditions of the program. Brokerage activity is not eligible.
All sources of water supply to the operation, including surface water where applicable, must be designed to prevent any introduction of wild fish into the facilities included in the program.
If the operator wishes to include only the segments of the farm under buildings, including the hatchery unit (except the fattening units), in the program, he must keep his eggs and fry, fish and broodstock under effective sanitary compartmentalization conditions as defined in the document Good biosecurity practices (PDF 196 KB) .
If the operator wishes to have the segments of the farm under buildings, including the hatchery unit and the segments of the farm outside buildings (i.e. the fattening units) registered in the programme separately, he must keep his eggs and fry, fish and broodstock under effective sanitary compartmentalisation conditions as defined in the document Good biosecurity practices (PDF 196 KB) .
