Description:

The Training on the Job (TOJ) program provides incentives to employers hiring and training workers who need experience and training, including pre-apprentice opportunities leading to apprenticeship registration. The program recognizes the need to develop selected participant’s work skills, abilities and/or attitudes in an environment where learning opportunities are provided.

Comments on Funding:

1. Funding takes the form of subsidies and the TOJ rates for a contract for a non-apprentice are 50% of the wages up to $15.00/hr to a maximum of 40 hours a week.
2. The employer must contribute a minimum of 50% of the apprentice’s wage
3. No wage subsidies are paid for holidays and sick time and overtime.
4. Wage reimbursement will be paid for regular hours worked only.

Eligibility criteria:
1. The TOJ program is available to public sector, private sector, non-governmental, charitable or voluntary organizations.
2. Private sector employers should have fewer than 50 employees.
3. The trainee should be training to fill a full-time, part-time (minimum of 20 hours per week) or a seasonal job.
4. Trainees may be unemployed, underemployed or apprentices.
5. Trainees should be residents of Nunavut for a minimum of one year. Non-Nunavut residents may be considered if federal funding is available.
