Youth Internship under the Northern Ontario Development Program (NODP) under Regional Economic Growth Through Innovation (REGI)

Description:

This program provides funding to not-for-profit organizations and SMEs who enroll young people in an internship.

Comments on Funding:

1. for not-for-profit organizations: funding is up to 90% ($35,000 per year) of the eligible costs for salary and employee benefit expenses in a full-time position for the internship period.
2. for SMEs: funding is up to 50% ($35,000) of the eligible costs for salary, employee benefit expenses, and professional and business skills development and associated travel costs for a period of 12 months in a full-time position.

Eligibility:

Eligible applicants must:
1. be not-for-profit organizations in Northern Ontario, such as community economic development, Aboriginal and Francophone organizations, industry and business associations, networks, or alliances.
2. be municipalities; municipal organizations; and First Nations in Northern Ontario.
3. be businesses in Northern Ontario: including an individual operating a business, partnerships, social enterprises, incorporated companies, corporations or co-operatives, or an Indigenous organization such as Indigenous/First Nation/Métis Settlement owned businesses, and all other types of enterprises.
4. engage in a project with benefits that accrue to Northern Ontario and the organization and the employee must both be located in Northern Ontario.

Young people eligible must:
1. be unemployed or underemployed youth (persons aged 30 and under);
2. have graduated within the last three years with a degree, diploma or certificate from a recognized post-secondary institution;
3. be legally entitled to work in Canada;
4. have not previously participated as a youth intern in FedNor’s NODP or in any other federal or provincial internship program with pay for a period of six months or more;
5. not be related to the directors, officers or managers of the organization;
6. work on projects related to innovation, digital economy or trade (applicable only to private-sector internships);
Participation of youth from employment equity groups is encouraged (Aboriginal, persons with disabilities, visible minorities and women).

Application Steps:

1. Before completing an application, applicants are encouraged to discuss their proposal with a FedNor officer serving their area.
2. Submit an Application for Financial Assistance providing key contact and project information.

Documentation Needed:

2. Provide a copy of the latest audited financial statements;
3. Provide proof of registration or incorporation (first-time applicants);
4. Complete the Applicant Declaration on Lobbying;
5. Submit a Youth Internship Work Plan and mentoring/supervisory arrangement;
6. Identify demonstrated networking opportunities for the intern;
7. Submit a post-internship retention plan;
8. Provide an endorsement by an appropriate or regulatory body, including union concurrence, where applicable;
9. Demonstrate a fair and transparent recruitment, interview and hiring process.
