Description:

The Water Program supports agricultural water management by helping primary producers adopt agriculture water better management practices and priority actions. This supports better management of risks to water quality and supplies, adaptation to climate variability and the efficient use of water resources.

The program has two streams (On-Farm Irrigation Stream and On-Farm Water Supply Stream), and applicants may apply to one or both of them.

Maximums:

On-Farm Water Supply Stream projects: If all of the project maximums are reached, there is an On-Farm Water Supply Stream maximum of $40,000 per applicant for the period April 1, 2023, to March 31, 2028.

Cost shares:
–Standard incentive projects: up to 50% for eligible expenses
–Special incentives (project specific) – varied

Eligibility:

Applicants must be primary producer operating in Alberta that:

1. Is responsible for input costs for agricultural crops or livestock producing at least $25,000 worth of farm commodities annually
2. Does not include a landlord whose only interest in the crop or livestock is that of ownership of the land
3. Is liable to pay Alberta income tax or corporate tax (or claim losses) on income from the production of farm commodities under the Income Tax Act (Canada) or the Alberta Corporate Tax Act

1. Determine whether you are eligible by reviewing the Water Program Terms and Conditions
2. Complete and sign the Water Program Application Form
3. Submit the completed Application Form and supporting documents by email to irrigationefficiency@gov.ab.ca or by Mail:

Documentation Needed:

Applicants must submit:

1. a completed Program Application Form which is signed by the Applicant (including, for applications to the On-Farm Water Supply Stream, a completed Environmental Checklist).
2. invoices/receipts and documentation, satisfactory to the Minister, setting out the expenses that the Applicant wishes to claim as Eligible Expenses, with proof that the Applicant incurred and paid those expenses for the Project. (Invoices, receipts and proofs of payment need to be itemized and in the name of the Applicant),
3. documentation, satisfactory to the Minister, of the In-Kind Contributions, if applicable, that the Applicant wishes to claim as Eligible Expenses, with proof that Applicant made the In-Kind Contributions for the Project.
4. photos of the Project, if required by the Project Application Form
5. approvals from the landowner or proof of right-of-way, as required on the Program Application Form,
6. copies of any written confirmation the Applicant received from government departments pursuant to section 4.4.1(c) that approvals were not required for the Project (if applicable)
7. any supplementary information requested by the Minister.
