Description:

Select Hay Insurance offers production and quality guarantees on five different hay types (alfalfa, alfalfa-grass mixtures, tame grasses, sweet clover and coarse hay), with each type of hay being insured separately for coverage and claim calculations (i.e. no offset between hay types). Coverage choices of 70% or 80% of probable yield are available for each hay type.

Comments on Funding:

Premiums are shared 40 per cent by the producer, 36 per cent by the Government of Canada, and 24 per cent by the Province of Manitoba.

Eligibility:

Applicants must:

1. Be Manitoba hay producers.
2. Have at least five acres of the hay type grown.
3. All hay types must have greater than 75 per cent ground cover to qualify for insurance.

Application Steps:

Applicants must register a claim for Select Hay Insurance before October 1, and provide notice at least 10 days prior to feeding, selling, or storing any production in an immeasurable position, or the claim may be denied.

Other Things to Note:

March 31 is the last day to apply for Select Hay Insurance, make changes to coverage, or to cancel Select Hay Insurance. Select Hay Insurance renews automatically each year unless cancelled by the producer before this date.
Producers are required to submit a Seeded Acreage Report to MASC by June 30 and a Harvested Production Report by November 30 (December 1 for 2025).
