British Columbia Business Grants: What’s Available and How to Apply

Looking to grow your business in British Columbia with non-repayable funding? This article breaks down the types of B.C. business grants, who offers them, what they can be used for, and how to qualify.
Whether you’re launching a new venture or scaling up, this guide will help you explore your options and access the support you need.
✅ What is a Business Grant?
A business grant is non-repayable funding provided by a government, non-profit, or other organization to support specific business activities. Unlike loans, grants do not need to be paid back — but they often come with eligibility requirements and conditions. Grants are typically used to encourage innovation, hiring, training, export development, and other growth-focused initiatives.
✅ Types of Business Grants in British Columbia
Grants in B.C. are typically structured around specific business needs, target groups, industries, or geographic regions. Here are four common types:
◾ Activity Grants
These grants fund specific business activities such as digital adoption, product development, hiring, market expansion, or clean technology upgrades.
◾ Audience Grants
Designed for specific groups such as Indigenous entrepreneurs, women, youth, immigrants, or persons with disabilities, these grants aim to improve access to business funding and support equitable growth.
◾ Industry Grants
B.C. supports key sectors like technology, clean energy, forestry, agrifood, film and digital media, and tourism through targeted grant programs that drive innovation and competitiveness.
◾ Regional Grants
Some grants focus on specific regions — including rural, coastal, and northern B.C. — to encourage economic development and diversification outside major urban centres like Vancouver and Victoria.
✅ What Can a Business Grant be Used for in British Columbia?
Depending on the program, business grants in British Columbia can be used for:
- Hiring and workforce development
- Research, development, and innovation
- Export readiness and market expansion
- Digital transformation and e-commerce
- Environmental upgrades and energy efficiency
- Infrastructure or equipment investment in key sectors
Programs may require businesses to contribute matching funds or meet specific outcomes to access full funding.
✅ How to Qualify for a Business Grant in British Columbia
Eligibility for B.C. business grants varies by program, but common requirements include:
- Operating a registered business in British Columbia
- Meeting specific size, sector, or ownership criteria
- Aligning with the grant’s purpose or funding priorities
- Submitting a clear proposal or application with supporting documents
Make sure to check the fine print — some grants are competitive, time-limited, or tied to regional or federal priorities.
✅ Alternatives to Business Grants in British Columbia
If you’re not eligible for a grant or want to explore other funding tools, B.C. offers several alternatives:
◾ Subsidies
Programs that help cover employment, training, or operational costs — especially for hiring youth, co-op students, or underrepresented groups.
◾ Government Loans
Low-interest or flexible-term loans from provincial or federal partners, often used for startup costs, equipment, or working capital.
◾ Tax Credits
Programs like the B.C. Interactive Digital Media Tax Credit or the Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) credit help reduce tax obligations based on eligible activities.
◾ Equity Investment Programs
Startups and high-growth businesses can access funding through accelerators, incubators, angel investor groups, or public venture capital initiatives active in the province.
