Alberta Business Grants: What’s Available and How to Apply

Looking to fund your Alberta business without taking on debt? This article breaks down the types of business grants available in Alberta, who offers them, what they can be used for, and how to qualify.
Whether you’re launching a startup or growing an existing business, this guide will help you navigate your funding options and take the next step with confidence.
✅ What is a Business Grant?
A business grant is non-repayable funding provided by a government, non-profit, or other organization to support specific business activities. Unlike loans, grants do not need to be paid back — but they typically come with eligibility criteria and reporting requirements. Grants are often used to encourage business development, innovation, hiring, and regional economic growth.
✅ Types of Business Grants in Alberta
Business grants in Alberta vary in purpose and are often categorized by what they support or who they’re meant to help. Below are four common types of grants available in the province:
◾ Activity Grants
These grants fund specific business activities such as research and development, technology adoption, export expansion, hiring, or training. They’re typically tied to measurable outcomes.
◾ Audience Grants
These are targeted at businesses owned or led by specific groups, such as youth, women, Indigenous entrepreneurs, newcomers, or persons with disabilities.
◾ Industry Grants
Certain Alberta grants focus on priority industries like agriculture, energy, clean technology, tourism, manufacturing, or digital media. These are designed to support sector growth and innovation.
◾ Regional Grants
Some grants are available only to businesses in specific regions, especially rural, northern, or underserved communities. These programs aim to promote economic development outside major urban centres.
✅ What Can a Business Grant be Used for in Alberta?
Business grants in Alberta can be used for a wide range of purposes, depending on the program. Common uses include:
- Hiring and training staff
- Product development and innovation
- Purchasing equipment or adopting new technology
- Expanding to new markets (including international)
- Supporting sustainability or energy efficiency initiatives
- Developing tourism or agriculture-related offerings
Some grants may require businesses to cover part of the cost (cost-sharing), while others may fully fund the approved activity.
✅ How to Qualify for a Business Grant in Alberta
To qualify for a business grant in Alberta, your business must generally:
- Operate in Alberta (or have a significant presence in the province)
- Fall within the target audience, sector, or activity of the grant
- Meet size or stage criteria (e.g., startup, small business, incorporated, etc.)
- Provide a clear business case or proposal that aligns with the grant’s goals
Each program has its own rules, so it’s important to review eligibility details, required documentation, and application timelines before applying.
✅ Alternatives to Business Grants in Alberta
Grants are just one way to fund your business. Alberta also offers several other types of financial support:
◾ Subsidies
Programs that cover part of your business expenses — most often related to wages, hiring, or training.
◾ Government Loans
Low-interest or flexible-term loans backed by provincial or federal agencies, often designed for small business growth, working capital, or equipment purchases.
◾ Tax Credits
Incentives that reduce your business’s tax burden, especially for activities like R&D, digital media production, or investment in new assets.
◾ Equity Investment Programs
Access to capital through investors, accelerators, or public investment funds — typically in exchange for equity in your business.
